Spring is here, even if the weather feels more like winter, and the vines are pushing. Pruning is finally finished, took a little longer this year due to lack of labor in Lake County. Frost season is upon us and we have run the sprinklers a few nights already. Let's wish for warm days and not too cold nights.
A bit about the past:
Our first Sauvignon Blanc vineyard of 15 acres was planted 19 years ago in the Big Valley area of Lake County. The following year 24 acres were planted in the Soda Bay area and 8 acres in Kelseyville. In 1998 an additional 13 acres were planted in the Soda Bay area. We became the first vineyard in the Scotts Valley area of Lakeport in 2001 with 10 acres and we planted another 8 acre vineyard in this area in 2014. In 2010 we grafted 12 acres in Kelseyville to Sauvignon Blanc.
Adobe Creek Orchards operates right here in Kelseyville, CA and is owned by Kenneth L. Barr. Ken is a graduate of UC Davis. Ken grew up in the small town of Geyserville, California where his family grew prunes. After graduating from UC Davis and doing a short career in banking Ken realized that farming was his call. He moved to Lake County and purchased his first pear orchard in 1972. He now owns and operates, in addition to the vineyards,540 acres of pears and is the owner of Adobe Creek Packing Company, a fresh pear packing facility. Ken is a very hands on grower. If you are ever looking for Ken try the vineyards or orchards.
